We were so poor. Cyprus were all over us for large parts of the game. If it wasn't for Buffon (how many times has he saved us, absolute genius) they'd have won 3/4-2.

We weren't helped with Gamberini going off in the first minute, nor Grosso departing either. Barzagli is a truly awful defender, he demonstrated this at Euro 2008 and has shown again tonight he is not Italy class.

Cassetti was largely responsible for the Cypriot goal - standing and watching the ball as Aloneftis came finished from 2 yards. Why he didn't swing at the ball I don't know.

The 4-4-2 we played worked OK in my opinion. The two early subs limited Lippi's options, but I thought the decision to take Toni off and bring on Gattuso was bizarre. The reason we were under pressure (and still under pressure even with Gattuso) was because we couldn't keep possession and our defence was woeful. Not because we lacked a 2nd holding midfielder. De Rossi (the proper holding player) and Pirlo (the deep lying playmaker whose very role requires him to sit in front of the defence) are more than enough. Di Natale was very good on the left, Camoranesi less so on the right. Gilardino's flick for the goal was superb.

Bringing on Gattuso meant we reverted to the shocking 4-3-3 that was so appalling in the summer. It just doesn't work, especially with 3 defensive players in the middle. We should not be playing this bloody formation!!

I'm hoping Lippi keeps the 4-4-2, and doesn't get scared by tonights performance. Things will improve, especially when the season is fully up and running. A line up of.....:

Buffon; Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso; Camoranesi, Pirlo, De Rossi, Di Natale; Cassano, Gilardino

.......would work very well indeed in my opinion, when everyone's fit obviously.

Lippi is considering reuniting Toni with Alberto Gilardino in attack, with Gilardino having scored an 89th-minute equalizer for Fiorentina in a 1-1 draw with Juventus on the opening weekend of Serie A.

Having struggled at AC Milan last season, Gilardino didn't make Italy's squad for Euro 2008. Vincenzo Iaquinta missed the tournament due to injury and has also been recalled.

"Two center forwards plus an outside attacker? That's a possible solution," Lippi said, hinting at a 4-3-3 formation.

With Euro 2008 revelation Giorgio Chiellini injured and Marco Materazzi left home, Fiorentina's Alessandro Gamberini is being tapped to start alongside Cannavaro in central defense.

"I know I've got a great chance and I'm ready to show what I'm worth," Gamberini said. "One of my objectives is to participate in the next World Cup."

Should be a comfortable game, and good to see gila play, especially as he is full of confidence again.

i like the look of that yeah, especially as zambrotta is probabaly the perfect full back to play in such a narrow formation. if ancelotti insists onplaying 1 up front with2 or 3 behind, like for periods against bologna, then those players need to support a lot. Shevchenko nearly scored from 6 yards so he was in the right place. also by playing the one up front it enables ronaldinho to play where he was so dangerous in that match. Id like to see them starting with one up front and including seedorf, ronaldnho and kaka, but then changing to 2 up front if they are not winning, with seedorf off and sheva/whoever coming on. also sheva has the bonus tht he plays deeper than the other centre forwards.

its great that milan have so many attacking options at the moment anyway.
